The Letter

They didn't have the know how.

Let's think about this carefully.

Love, the one who sees you now.

Safety, gentleness, having their ducks in a row,

hard to pass on when the cup is empty.

They didn't have the know how.

Mountains of laundry, buried: she burned the chow.

The inheritance she received was worry.

Love, the one who sees you now.

"I'll never forgive him!" Did you make a vow-

after he walked on your feelings so heedlessly?

They didn't have the know how.

Not sure who it's from, mom, dad or spouse?

They never thought to say that apology,

Love, the one who sees you now.

Down on bended knee, if I take a bow,

will you accept it from me? I'm so sorry.

They didn't have the know how.

Love, the one who sees you now.

Villanelle-

A nineteen-line poem with two

rhymes throughout, consisting of five tercets and a quatrain, with the first

and third lines of the opening tercet

recurring alternately at the end of the

other tercets and with both repeated

at the close of the concluding quatrain.
