Practice the pause, He said.
It will be fun, they said.
Like pulling a ponderosa pine out of my eye, I'm learning.
Practicing has never been my forte.
I don't like to be told what to do,
and I prefer to get right to the action.
Sometimes that gets me into trouble.
But watching the moon rise at 1:30am,
because that's when I received the words,
makes me sure of the lesson.
The beauty is in the practice,
and listening to the Coach.
"You can't rush the words," He said.
"I know who they're for.
Don't worry about that part.
Just wait for them to come and be ready.
When I reveal them to you,
you will gasp, breathless, realizing
this is what you've been practicing for."
Heavy with meaning,
dripping like a nursing mother, at 1:30am.
So familiar is that feeling.
The words on the page or a baby's cries
won't wait 'til morning.
